Journey of a Beginner Blogger: My Real-Life Experience with starting blog and the Challenge of Earning Money
Greetings, aspiring bloggers! I’m on an exciting expedition into the vast world of blogging, SEO, and the aspiration to monetize online content. This post is a candid look into my journey so far — from the joys of my first blog post to the puzzles of SEO, and the complexities of driving traffic. Keep in mind, this isn’t a guide from an expert, but rather a travelogue from a fellow beginner navigating the complex terrain of blogging. We’re in this together — learning, stumbling, and growing. Ready to explore this fascinating endeavor? Come join me as we navigate the blogging landscape and inch closer to our goal of monetization!
My Starting Point
Like many of you, I’m a voracious consumer of content spanning personal growth, business, finance, health, and tech. I’ve always found myself drawn to the richness and timelessness of the business and health sectors. With so much knowledge to share and a wealth of never-outdated content, these two niches seemed like the perfect starting point for my blogging journey.
You see, I’ve always been intrigued by the concept of passive income, and blogging seemed like a promising avenue to explore. I’ve dabbled with YouTube in the past (but that’s a tale for another day), and I wanted to continue on the path of content creation. With blogging, I saw an opportunity to not only consolidate the wealth of knowledge I’ve amassed over time but also to provide valuable insights to others in need.
So here I am, embarking on a journey to create a platform that serves as a reference point for myself and a helpful resource for my readers, all while aspiring to build a passive income stream. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding!
Creating Content
As a daily consumer and experimenter, ideas for blog posts come to me quite naturally. I constantly find myself learning and discovering new aspects of business, health, and blogging itself. Like, did you know that a fast-loading webpage could significantly boost your blog’s ranking, or that being an active member of various blogging communities can provide a wealth of resources and networking opportunities!
Despite being new to the writing world, I’m committed to a minimum of one post per week. Though I wouldn’t consider myself a seasoned writer (yet!), I’ve found artificial intelligence (AI) tools to be incredibly helpful in polishing my content. They’ve truly been a game-changer, helping me ensure that my writing is clear, engaging, and valuable to my readers.
So, here’s the thing — you don’t have to be a Shakespeare or a Hemingway to start blogging. With the right tools and a genuine passion for your topics, you can create content that truly resonates with your audience.
Building an Email List
In my blogging journey, building an email list was one of the initial steps I took. It started off modestly, but let me tell you, there’s a special kind of excitement when you see that subscriber count start to rise. Today, I am immensely grateful to have 30 amazing individuals who have shown their interest and faith in my content.
I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to all of my subscribers. You’re not just numbers on a screen, but real people who’ve found value in my work. Your support provides me with the motivation to continue learning, growing, and sharing my journey.
Remember, an email list is more than a tool for reach and monetization — it’s a community of people who share your interests and value your insights. Start building your community early, nurture it consistently, and always provide value. It’s a rewarding journey, one subscriber at a time.
Promoting the Blog
Promoting my blog was an adventure in itself. I decided to start with Facebook ads, utilizing strategies focused on post engagement and website clicks. I kept my budget modest, at $2 per day, running different campaigns over 15 days for various posts on my Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as for overall website reach.
While I saw an uptick in traffic(as you can see above), it wasn’t as fruitful as I’d hoped. The visitors from ads didn’t engage much with my content or subscribe to my blog, prompting me to pause the campaigns after a few days. However, my efforts weren’t entirely in vain; I gained around 60 likes on my Facebook page via ads.
One Instagram post, in particular, got high engagement, but without any significant follower conversion. This experience was a reminder of the nuanced nature of social media advertising and the need for a precise audience targeting strategy.
Now, I’ve taken a step back from ads to focus more on learning about them, their effective utilization, and SEO. The key takeaway here is to continuously learn, adapt, and be open to exploring different avenues to promote your blog. The journey is as much about discovering what doesn’t work as it is about finding what does.
Learning SEO
Diving headfirst into SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, has been both fascinating and challenging. The world of keywords, backlinks, on-page and off-page SEO is vast and incredibly significant in the journey of making a blog visible to a wider audience.
Recently, I’ve started creating backlinks via Medium and delving deeper into the nuances of on-page SEO. The progress I’ve made has been largely thanks to an excellent SEO course I’ve been following. It’s been instrumental in helping me navigate this complex landscape.
If you’re a beginner like me and want to demystify SEO, I am currently going through this course. It’s comprehensive and beginner-friendly, and I’ve found it to be valuable. As I am still going through it, I cannot provide a full review. I will update this once done!
The learning never stops in the SEO world, and I’m eager to share more insights from this journey in my upcoming posts. Here’s to our mutual journey towards creating search engine-friendly blogs!
The Challenge of Monetization
Monetization is the ultimate goal for many bloggers, and I’m no different. However, it’s important to understand that it’s more of a marathon than a sprint. My initial goal was to start earning at least a dollar by the end of two months, but my journey so far has been a stark reminder that monetization requires substantial effort, consistent content, and steady traffic growth.
While I’ve seen some success in building an email list and promoting my blog, translating this into monetization has proven to be a bigger challenge. I’m learning that it’s crucial to not only create valuable content but also to attract and retain the right audience.
Nevertheless, I’m undeterred. This challenge only motivates me further to learn, adapt, and persevere. My journey towards monetization continues and I look forward to sharing my progress and learnings with you all. Remember, every hurdle is a stepping stone to success!
Balancing Blogging with Full-Time Work
Finding a balance between my full-time job and my blogging ambitions has been one of the greatest challenges. In a world where time is a precious commodity, juggling professional commitments with the desire to create and share valuable content is a constant learning process.
As I navigate through this journey, I’ve realized that successful blogging doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing your day job. Instead, it requires meticulous planning, effective time management, and a whole lot of passion.
My late-night blogging sessions, lunchtime brainstorming, and weekend content creation have become a rewarding routine, a testament to my dedication towards this blog. Despite the challenges, the joy of seeing my blog grow, post by post, subscriber by subscriber, is an exhilarating experience.
For anyone who is working full-time and considering starting a blog, remember: it’s a challenge, yes, but it’s a fulfilling one. With resilience and persistence, you can certainly walk the tightrope successfully.
The Road Ahead
Looking ahead, there’s a long road full of opportunities and challenges. My journey thus far has taught me that blogging isn’t a quick win, but a marathon of continuous learning, adapting, and growing. My goals include mastering SEO, refining my promotion strategy, and eventually achieving blog monetization.
The task is by no means easy, but every small milestone, every subscriber, every blog post, fuels my drive to keep going. I’m excited about the road ahead and plan to share every part of this journey with you. Remember, each of us is capable of creating something valuable and unique.
